Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure is an attraction that is present to both Disney California Adventure. In Walt Disney Studios Park, it is known as Spider-Man W.E.B. Adventure.

History[]

Backstory[]

Guests are invited to the open-house of the Worldwide Engineering Brigade, an organization funded by Tony Stark for young engineers and inventors. At the open-house, project lead Peter Parker shows off their projects the Web Slinger vehicle and Spider-Bots, inspired by Peter's secret vigilante alter-ego, "Spider-Man" and which were built alongside WEB members Lunella Lafayette, Doreen Green, Harley Keener and Onome.

However, during a painfully uncharismatic and awkward explanation of WEB technology, the Spider-Bots begin duplicating rapidly and threaten to inadvertently destroy Avengers Campus. Peter Parker switches into Spider-Man garb and along with WEB's artificial-intelligence S.H.A.R.I.N., put guests into the Web-Slingers to travel through Avengers Campus' subterranean utilidoors to shoot webs at the Spider-Bots and defeat them.

Development history[]

Web-Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure is an Avengers Campus attraction which replaced portions of A Bug's Land and which was themed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man movies. The attraction was inspired by shooting attractions though rather than featuring actual sets or set-pieces, uses flat screens with CGI imagery that the vehicles are stationed in-front of; and instead of having guns or cannons, making guests flail their arms around for roughly 3 minutes to shoot CGI webs at the screen. This was also the first mainstream Disney attraction to feature DLC, having guests purchase upgrades for their web-shooters along with being able to purchase the ride's antagonists, the Spider-Bots.

Web Slingers: A Spider-Man Adventure opened to mixed-to-negative reception for its DLC, physically tiring shooting mechanics, aesthetic confusion, long-wait times for a short attraction, and awkward writing. A near carbon-copy of the attraction was later created in Walt Disney Studios Park, repurposing the exact-same footage from the California attraction including Tom Holland's Peter Parker (now dubbed over in French, out of sync with his mouth), and footage of going through California's Avengers Campus locations (despite them being absent in Paris' park).

Trivia[]

  • Disney's rival Universal Studios created their own Spider-Man attraction The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man in 1999 which also used hybrids of physical sets and 3D projection. While using significantly less visually advanced CGI, Universal's attraction has been generally better received than that of Avengers Campus' due to its enhanced immersion, more charismatic Spider-Man, comic-book New York aesthetic, and story featuring Spider-Mans's rogues gallery rather than the commercialized Spider-Bots.
  • Several members of WEB in the comics are members of The Champions, a team of young-adult superheroes who became disaffected with their older counterparts and decided to form their own team.
  • Near the end of the ride is a vehicle with the name, "HEIMLICH".[1] This is as it is a stripped down vehicle from the attraction Heimlich's Chew Chew Train from A Bug's Land which predicated Avengers Campus.
