Scarlet Witch AKA Wanda Maximoff is an X-Men villain turned classic Avengers member from Marvel Comics. She first appeared in The X-Men #4 from the March of 1964.

History

Wanda Maximoff is a superhuman with the power to manipulate the fabric of reality, along with dormant dark magical abilities. She was a member of the Nazi organization HYDRA alongside her brother Pietro Maximoff AKA Quicksilver who had super-speed. The two fought the Avengers before Quicksilver died and Scarlet Witch joined their ranks. During her time in the Avengers, she presumably had a romantic relationship with the synthezoid, "Vision" before he seemingly died of unknown circumstances.

For a period of time, Wanda inadvertently trapped the town of Westview, New Jersey in an idealized pocket-dimension. At some point, Wanda encountered the sorceress Agatha Harkness who attempted to claim some of her powers. On a later occasion, Wanda became connected to darker multiverse magic and appeared at the Ancient Sanctum in Avengers Campus California.

Trivia

  • The Scarlet Witch who appears in the parks is based on the highly controversial and racist version of the character from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Said version has received criticism for being offensive due to Scarlet Witch being a character that is Jewish-Romani, while in the MCU she is a white woman, a former member of the Nazi group HYDRA and in WandaVision was identified as a, "fortune-teller", a racist stereotype for Romani people which her comic-counterpart often tried to counter.
    • Scarlet Witch's more comic-accurate design has been featured in artwork of the Hotel New York such as in the, "Women of Marvel" exhibit.[1]
