Loki Laufeyson is a super-villain first appearing in his mainstream form in Journey into Mystery #85 from the October of 1962. He is an Asgardian trickster god and adoptive brother of Thor Odinson. Loki also refers to multiple, "Variants" in the timeline.
History[]
Background[]
Loki was the Jotun son of the Frost Giant king Laufey. As an infant, he was adopted by the king of Asgard, Odin and raised as his son. Here, Loki had Odin's biological son Thor as an elder brother and Odin's wife Frigga as his mother. Due to Odin's toxic parenting, Loki grew up to be a cunning and overly ambitious magic-user with goals of conquering the realms.[1]
One of Loki's earlier schemes involved manipulating Odin into exiling Thor to Earth, attempting to usurp Odin, and sending Asgard's robotic enforcer, "The Destroyer" to fight Thor on Earth. Loki's schemes were foiled by Thor before Loki disappeared and joined forces with the Mad Titan, Thanos.
Battle of New York[]
In 2012, Loki lead a Chitauri army against Earth to try and conquer the planet and steal a powerful artifact known as the Tesseract. During this time, he was equipped himself with a sceptre containing an Infinity Stone, gifted to him by Thanos. This resulted in the Battle of New York which caused the formation of the Avengers and Loki's arrest. Following his defeat at the hands of the Avengers, Loki was imprisoned below the palace of Asgard. Loki would also be considered one of the most wanted super-criminals in the data-base of SHIELD.
The Dark World[]
Loki was imprisoned in Asgard when the realm was attacked by the Dark Elves, lead by Malekith the Accursed. The Dark Elves murdered Thor and Loki's mother, Frigga in this attack. Because of this, Thor let Loki out of imprisonment so that they could travel to the Dark World and prevent Malekith from casting the universe into darkness.
Stark Expo[]
At some point in time, Loki joined forces with the nazi Johann Schmidt AKA The Red Skull of HYDRA. Red Skull was in possession of the Casket of Ancient Winters, an Asgardian relic which Loki planned on using to conquer the Nine Realms. In return for Loki acquiring the casket, he agreed to steal a new Arc Reactor made with Vibranium from a Stark Expo held in Paris, France.
Loki used the mind augmenting abilities of his sceptre to sew discord amongst the superheroes Thor, Spider-Man and Black Widow who were present at the expo. When Red Skull and his soldiers appeared at the expo, Loki used Schmidt's casket to freeze the superheroes, then agreed to let the nazi examine it. Red Skull used the arc reactor to power the casket and betrayed Loki, freezing him before beating the trickster god to a pulp on the ground.
Red Skull's plans were ultimately unsuccessful as he was disintegrated by superhero Captain Marvel. After this, Loki was recovered and arrested by Thor.
Time Variance Authority[]
By the late 2010s/2020s, Loki and/or variants of him were active in Avengers Campus of Orange, California. At least one of these variants was arrested by the Time Variance Authority, a fascist time-travelling organization which kept reality on a predetermined time-line. Another variant of Loki active in the campus was, "President Loki" who was campaigning for presidency at the Campus. Meanwhile, the imprisoned Loki was enlisted among the TVA's ranks as an ally of circumstance.
