In real world science, Gamma (γ) Radiation is the highest known frequency wavelength of electromagnetic radiation, and which arrises from the the radioactive decay of atomic nuclei. Gamma radiation is commonly used in a fictionalized form in Marvel comics, most famously being affiliated with the Hulk franchise where it is often depicted with a green hue. While a deadly radiation, Marvel characters exposed to Gamma radiation often develop grotesque and difficult to control super-powers as was the case for heroes like the Hulk, She-Hulk, Doc Sampson, Brawn and Sasquatch, or with villains such as the Leader, the Abomination, Red Harpy, Madman and the Rhino.
Notable uses[]
- Stark Motors and their subsidiary Geffen-Meyer Chemicals experimented with Gamma Radiation around the 1950s in the Stark Industrial Compound. They dumped the waste outside the building, causing a tree to become mutated.
- Dr. Bruce Banner attempted to recreate Dr. Abraham Erskine's super-soldier serum with Gamma radiation. This created a green formula which he tested on himself, turning himself into the Hulk.
- While on the run from the government, Bruce Banner worked at a Pingo Doce soda plant where an accident caused some of his blood to contaminate the soda.
- After being effectively pardoned, Bruce Banner taught classes on Gamma Science at the Super Hero Academy and lectures at Avengers Campus Paris.
- Several members of the Worldwide Engineering Brigade experiment with Gamma Radiation. Amadeus Cho used gamma irradiated nano-bots to give himself super-strength. He and Lunella Lafayette experimented on gamma materials together.
- Bruce's cousin Jennifer Walthers became exposed to his blood, turning her into She-Hulk.
